Description

This course is an introduction for nurses and advanced practice clinicians on commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) and how it relates to clinical practice. Using a lens of reproductive justice, the module discusses how to identify and support the health and safety needs of individuals affected by or at risk of CSEC. It explores the myriad of impacts CSEC can have on a person, from physical health to emotional, cognitive, and social impacts. The course will further discuss how nurses can use a trauma-informed and harm reduction approach to assess, treat, and support patients experiencing CSEC.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course learners will be able to:

  • Describe the individual, social, and structural risk factors associated with CSEC, including how intersectional oppressions can compound those risk factors

  • List potential indicators of CSEC in the health care setting

  • Identify three ways that nurses can assess and respond to patients who are at-risk or affected by CSEC

  • Explain the professional responsibilities of assessing and treating patients who are at risk or affected by CSEC

  • Utilize trauma-informed techniques in caring for and communicating with patients who are at risk or affected by CSEC
