Description

Black birthing people experience disproportionately high rates of maternal and postpartum complications and related deaths, driven by systemic racism, implicit bias, and inequities within health care systems. In this session, we will focus on the vital role nurses play in resisting these harms and restoring trust, dignity, and safety in perinatal care. Participants will explore practical, evidence-based strategies for advocating for Black birthing people during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period — from providing culturally responsive care to challenging institutional biases and supporting systemic change. Through a framework of reproductive justice and patient-centered advocacy, nurses will learn how to intervene at the bedside and beyond, fostering environments where Black birthing people can thrive across the perinatal continuum.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the impacts of systemic racism, implicit bias, and structural inequities on the health outcomes of Black birthing people during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care.
  • Learn evidence-based, culturally responsive strategies to advocate for Black birthing people at the bedside and within broader health care systems.
  • Demonstrate approaches grounded in reproductive justice and patient-centered advocacy to promote systemic change and create safer, more equitable perinatal care environments.
