Grief, Death, and End-of-Life Care: Lessons for Every Nurse

In the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) sector we often talk about trauma-informed, patient-centered care. These same frameworks can and should be utilized in the care we provide to patients and their families as they navigate death. The process of death can look different depending on your nursing specialty, from sudden trauma to long-term illnesses, but nurses in every field will intimately deal with death. Yet, as with sexual and reproductive health, nurses are not given education on how to medically or emotionally support our patients and their loved ones as they navigate this life transition or how to care for ourselves as we are exposed to trauma and grief. In the last session of our education series focused on grieving, we will discuss the principles of patient-centered care unique to the end of life and tools for nurses to care for ourselves as we continue to navigate secondary trauma and grief.
