Description

This 1- hour session introduces the many ways queer and trans people build families including at-home insemination (DIY), intracervical insemination (ICI), intrauterine insemination (IUI), IVF, RIVF, surrogacy, fostering, and adoption, highlighting the benefits, limitations, and considerations of each. Participants will learn different donor options for sperm, eggs, and gestational carriers, be introduced to fertility awareness methods, and understand the roles of different care providers in supporting family building journeys. The session concludes by addressing the emotional, relational, and legal considerations that affect queer and trans family-building, and opportunities for further learning.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the range of pathways available for queer and trans people building a family, including the relative benefits, challenges, and considerations of each.

  2. Describe common methods of insemination (e.g., IUI, IVF, ICI) and compare their relative success rates and suitability for different circumstances.

  3. Locate and evaluate sources for donor sperm, donor eggs, and gestational carriers/uteruses, including key considerations when choosing a source.

  4. Recognize the emotional, social, and legal considerations involved in third-party reproduction and alternative family-building for queer people, and identify strategies or resources for navigating them.
