Oftentimes when we hear the word grief we think about the loss of a family member, a friend or a patient. Loss is so much more than the narrow space between living and dying. As nurses we are constantly exposed to and exposing our patients to loss and subsequent grief. Whether a diagnosis alters how a person physically shows up in the world, how they communicate or their self-esteem, treating a person with a chronic or life-altering diagnosis is so much more than physical care. In this session we will discuss the importance of understanding grief as a chronic and dynamic state and how this framing allows us to better provide holistic, person-centered care to patients experiencing chronic illness or life-altering diagnosis. We will also offer strategies on how to integrate this care into your nursing practice.
